Tran Dinh Toan

In 2011, Toan was wrongfully convicted by a court in BaRia-Vung Tau and sentenced to 15 months in prison. He appealed to the Supreme Court, and the Court sided with him, issuing a notice to the lower court to vacate his conviction, citing irregularities during the discovery and prosecution process.

However, the lower court never dismissed Toan’s case, because the Supreme Court failed to issue an order for them to do so. For years Toan, a wounded veteran from the Kampuchea war, continued to press the courts to close the case to no avail. All this was described in detail by state media.
