Attorney Tran Van Sy completed his two-year sentence for "abusing democratic freedoms" (Art. 331) and was released on Feb. 25.
Background
Sy worked for over 30 years as a lawyer. At one point, he was the head of Vinh Long Province's Lawyers Association and a member of the National Attorney Association; he has also taught at the Law Institute for many years. In 2022, Sy started a Youtube channel (Sy's Law Office) to livestream and discuss legal issues. While the government accuses him of violating the rights of some famous people (such as Dai Nam CEO Nguyen Phuong Hang), it is widely believed that his online exposure of irregularities in the prosecution of deathrow inmate Ho Duy Hai and members of Bong Lai Temple contributed to his arrest and conviction.

Details of Imprisonment
In Feb. 2023, police arrested attorney Tran Van Sy and searched his office in Vinh Long Province. Sy was investigated for violating Article 331 related to the Phuong Hang case. No further details were given.
