Dam Ngoc Tuyen received two messages from his ex-wife on the night of September 9, 2019, in which she reminded him not to do anything that could affect his son’s future. His son is now living in his hometown, while Tuyen himself travels to other provinces for work and only visits home occasionally. Since his divorce, Tuyen and his wife have rarely communicated unless it was regarding their son. Her message to Tuyen implied that they were threatened because of Tuyen’s activism.

Tuyen reported that three years ago, a security official named Son threatened him not to write any negative things about the Communist party, of which Son was a member, otherwise his son’s future would definitely be affected. Since October 2018, the public security of Quang Ngai province has accused Tuyen of being “a reactionary” who was afraid to go home, even though he still goes home regularly on special occasions.

His name was brought up in a meeting of Hanh Thuan District, probably to condemn his activism. Two weeks before Tuyen received his ex-wife’s messages, two public security officials had gone to his house in Hanh Thuan District, Quang Ngai Province, which was probably to pressure Tuyen’s family. Therefore, his ex-wife’s messages were believed to be the result of this harassment.
