Despite the official rhetoric saying that anyone has the right to self-nominate and run for a seat in the National Assembly, most of those who did so in the run up to the 2021 elections were treated with hostility and harassment. From criminal charges and detentions to other types of harassment and interventions, many independent candidates were either forced to drop out of the elections or faced imprisonment.
