Vietnam Free Expression Newsletter No. 12 – Week of May 15-21

Greetings from The 88 Project! We are bringing to you news, analysis, and actions regarding human rights and civil society in Vietnam during the week of May 15 to 21. Environmental activist Hoàng Đức Bình and Hòa Hảo Buddhist follower Vương Văn Thả were arrested this week. Dissident musician Trần Vũ Anh Bình was released, a few months earlier than his term. We also have an update on the situation of young journalist Phan Kim Khánh, two months after his arrest. The family of detained human rights defender Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh, as well as independent journalist Phạm Đoạn Trang, were placed under de facto house arrest over the weekend prior to the U.S.-Vietnam Human Rights Dialogue.
